Riding Guidelines
ACRTA uses a flag stop method for the bus to stop. Simply
stand by the curb of one of our bus routes and raise your
hand to flag down the bus as it approaches. Do not approach
the bus until it has made a complete stop and the doors
open. If there are passengers alighting from the bus, stand
back and allow them to clear the step well before you enter
the bus.
Have your fare or pass ready before you get on the bus.
Drop your own fare into the fare box when boarding the bus
or hand the bus operator your ticket so it may be punched
for your fare. You must have the exact fare. Bus operators
do not carry change. You must also show your passenger ID
card to the bus operator to obtain the reduced fare rate for
elderly and disabled passengers.
All ACRTA buses have route signs located on the front of the
bus and the passenger side of the bus. The routes are
color-coded on the bus signs to match the colors in the
schedule for easier identification of the correct bus. If
you are not sure you are boarding the right bus, ask the
operator. Operators are willing and happy to answer your
questions about ACRTA services.
As your bus approaches your destination, pull the buzzer
cord to signal that you want off at the next safe place to
stop. Exit the bus from the rear door whenever possible.
Be sure to check your seat so you do not leave anything
behind.
ACRTA operators will call out all major stops along their
route, including major intersections, businesses, hospitals,
shopping areas, and the transit center to help the visually
impaired passengers with their destination. Drivers will
also call out any stop upon request when you board a
vehicle.
ACRTA buses have a kneeling feature to lower the front step
to allow for easier boarding and alighting for elderly and
disabled passengers. However, in very frigid weather the
kneeling device cannot always be used.
ACRTA buses also are equipped with wheelchair lifts. Once
the bus has stopped, allow other passengers to board or exit
the bus and tell the bus operator you need the wheelchair
lift. Move back at least six feet from the front steps to
allow the lift to extend fully. The bus operator will tell
you when to get on the lift. You should always back onto
the lift, facing out. Set your brake on your wheelchair or
scooter and try to hold on to the handrails. The bus
operator will have you face forward when riding on the bus,
secure your wheelchair or mobility device into position, and
fasten a seat belt around you as well. You may transfer to
a seat if you are ambulatory and can transfer on your own
and if you wish to do so.
The ACRTA operator is not required to assist you with
groceries and packages. Please only bring as much as your
or a person with you can carry on at one time.
The front seats on all ACRTA buses have “priority seating”
signs for elderly and disabled passengers. Please by
courteous and respect the elderly and disabled passengers by
sitting elsewhere in the bus and leaving the front seats
open for them.
Passengers are not permitted to eat, drink, or smoke on any
ACRTA vehicle. Passengers may bring food and/or drinks on
the vehicle but may not have open packages, cans, bottles,
or containers of food and drink.
Playing radios, CD players, etc. is prohibited unless using
earphones.
You must remain seated until the bus comes to a complete
stop. You may open windows only when given permission by
the bus operator. You cannot stick any part of your body
out of the windows.
Do not throw trash or any object on the floor or the seats
of the buses. If you see trash or objects on the floor or
the seats, please notify your bus operator as soon as it is
sage to move inside the vehicle.
Please follow these simple rules and make riding a pleasure
for everyone. If you have any questions, comments, or
concerns; call us at 419-222-2RTA!
